HOW TO APPLY

Applying for your Texas License To Carry consist of 3 actions that have to be performed by the applicant:

  • Register online with the Texas Department of Public Safety for your License To Carry.
  • Have your fingerprints electronically scanned by an authorized fingerprinting center.
  • Attend and pass a handgun proficiency class in your area.

1). Registration with the Texas Department of Public Safety is easy and only takes a few minutes. Registration should be done using a computer instead of a phone or tablet, because you will need to be able to print out your checklist. Applicants should apply at: LTC Online Application

You will need your drivers license in order to register. Once registration is completed and you have paid online, print the “Checklist” prior to clicking the link to the fingerprinting company. The “Checklist” consist of two (2) pages, one with a large barcode across the top of the page. The barcoded “Checklist” will need to be mailed back to the Texas Department of Public Safety with the CHL-100 form received upon successful completion of a handgun proficiency course. The second page is used as your receipt for payment and should be kept for your records.

The barcoded “Checklist” and CHL-100 form should be mailed to the address listed on the barcoded checklist form. In case you have trouble finding the address, the mailing address to return your checklist and CHL-100 form to is:

Texas Department of Public Safety
Handgun Licensing Program, MSC 0245
P.O. Box 4087
Austin, Texas 78773-0245

2). The Texas Department of Public Safety requires that applicant fingerprints be electronically scanned by an authorized fingerprinting center. There should be a link to IdentoGO by MorphoTrust USA on the final page after completing your registration with the DPS. You can also reach the IdentoGO website at the following url: IdentoGO Please note that you will need your Trace Number from the Barcoded Checklist issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety in order to access their website from the above url.

When registering with IdentoGO, it is NOT necessary to purchase a copy of your background check. You will be required to choose a date and time for your fingerprinting appointment, and charged a $10.95 fee for the fingerprinting service. Once your fingerprints have been scanned, they will be electronically submitted to the Texas Department of Public Safety and attached to your License To Carry application.

NOTE: Registration with the Texas Department of Public Safety MUST be performed prior to being fingerprinted so that your fingerprints have an application to be assigned to.

3). The third step in the licensing process is to attend a handgun proficiency course. The proficiency course may be completed either prior to registering with the Texas Department of Public Safety or following registration, but may be completed no more than six (6) months prior to or after registration.

Handgun proficiency courses are required by law to be a minimum of four (4) hours, not including range time or any associated breaks.
